If you have difficulty meditating because you are not concentrating on conversations and other noises, the ideal is to use music to relax. Put on headphones and choose calm and serene songs, like sounds of nature, for example. 

There are also mantras that can help you blur from the outside and focus on the present. The important thing is not to choose a lively song, as this will make you get even more excited. 

Realize your breath

The key to knowing how to meditate is in the breath, then, that you should focus on. Even if you are in a noisy place, make an effort to notice this vital aspect.

Watch for air entering your nostrils and then filling your lungs until you leave. Feel how calm and unhurried breathing brings positive feelings and well-being. Let yourself go through this practice!

One of the meanings of meditation is the connection with oneself. To reach that level, you can start by creating calm scenarios in your mind, like a beach you like. Imagine the waves coming and going, bringing more tranquility to your life.

The idea is to have a place to walk, connect with nature and contemplate. Therefore, you can completely transform your backyard into a haven of peace. So, if you already have a garden, this can be achieved just by adding one or another new element. In some cases, you can simply change small details or perhaps rethink what you already have. 

So, whether you want to turn your backyard into a meditation garden or just create a small peaceful place to sit and relax at the end of a busy day, you will be surprised at how easy and inexpensive it is to transform your garden.

1) Water, sand and stones

Symbol of life, water can be inserted into a small artificial lake, waterfall or even a fountain. But if the option is for a dry environment, the water is represented by gravel, sand or small stones.

These elements are at the heart of most Zen gardens. You can make your meditation garden more relaxing by simply thinking of a place to add sand, gravel and adding larger stones wherever you want. You can keep a small hoe or shovel to move the sand from time to time and give it a wavy appearance so that it resembles ocean waves. 

After all, ocean waves are the most relaxing things, aren’t they?

2) Paths and plants

Part of creating an appearance that is conducive to meditation is having paths to walk and admire the landscape. You can create this easily with stones, tiles, boards or even wooden decks, and then add your various plants, or perhaps include a beautiful bonsai – mosses and vegetables also work very well. 

This is a really simple step you can take over time or spend a weekend completely overhauling your yard, and it will be something that will instantly transform your garden into a contemplative paradise.

3) A little bit of moss

Like rocks and sand, moss is an important aspect of your meditation garden. Moss is one of the most common plants in a Japanese Zen garden and you can easily incorporate it into your contemplation garden. Plant moss in the center of your sand or rock path, or just have containers of moss around your relaxation area. Moss also grows well where other plants and flowers do not, so it is an excellent cover for areas with poor soil quality. 

4) Think about colors

If the idea is to create a garden, the ideal is not to dare too much in the colors, but a little color can make the place more joyful. Think of peaceful colored perennials, contrasting colored stones, and perhaps a little white mixed in for a relaxing effect. Japanese cherry blossoms are the most beautiful and relaxing flowers, but if you can’t add a Japanese cherry, think of a clay or colored vase in a color scheme for a relaxing effect.

5) Bamboo

Bamboo will definitely give you the feeling of being in Japan, where Zen gardens originated, so adding it to your backyard is sure to have the same effect. You can add a small fountain of bamboo water. Or you can add bamboo fences around your garden or any number of other bamboo creations. And bamboo is not as expensive as you might think. 

6 – Prioritize simplicity

There are so many ways to build your own outdoor meditation and contemplation garden. You can add as many different elements or opt for a more minimalist proposal. If you really want to feel the peace and relaxation, you can add some garden lanterns, or even a Japanese lantern that will give a special charm to the environment. You can also add other elements that beautify your space and make it the perfect place to relax. But don’t forget, the secret is to keep it simple – you won’t feel peace if you overload the garden with too many elements.
